Private Pilot Test Prep

Sunbreak's Private Pilot Test Prep sessions are one-on-one meetings with authorized instructors where student pilots get personal attention. We're here to help clarify some of the more complex subjects in the aviation curriculum.

If you've decided to study for the FAA's Private Pilot knowledge test on your own, that's great! You've demonstrated a willingness to take on challenging subject matter by yourself. If you're making progress, we know that you've given up a lot of your free time to get there.

However, it's easy to get stuck. Even with diligent effort, some areas of the Private Pilot curriculum are hard to grasp without a bit of help. For example:

• Aerodynamics: The explanations offered in various texts are highly accurate, but developing corresponding mental models can be difficult without an instructor's insights. These mental models translate directly to flying skills, helping student pilots develop intuitive aircraft control.
   
• Weather: Most weather questions on the knowledge test can be solved by referencing a few basic rules of physics. Unfortunately, some learning materials prioritize details over the fundamentals.
   
• Navigation and flight planning: The scenario-based navigation problems on the knowledge test can be intimidating. With training, they become some of the easiest ones to solve.
   
• VORs: Navigation by VOR is abstract and challenging, and VOR test questions require accurate visualization of instruments as they relate to aircraft positions. Looking at VORs with an instructor and a table-top system can help lift the fog.
   
• Weight & Balance calculations: Most W&B is straight-up math and not that difficult. However, this also is an area where students often request help — particularly when the math must be applied to complex diagrams and tables.

Private Pilot Test Prep sessions are $49 per hour. Two-hour sessions are $89, with three-hour sessions for just $129.

Student Training Logs

By regulation (CFR 61.105), student pilots seeking a Private Pilot Certificate "must receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor or complete a home-study course" in specified aeronautical knowledge areas.

Student pilots who complete test prep sessions at Sunbreak will be offered endorsement(s) per 61.105. The authorized instructor will provide these endorsements in the student's logbook or on Sunbreak's Ground School training log.
